Halloween!

Dear pupils, today is Halloween's day.
So don't forget to wear scary clothes (vampire, ghost, witch...). You can also make a Jack-o' lantern or bake a pumkin pie. Knock at your neighbours' doors and say "trick or treat!". People will give you sweets. have fun!

Let's bake a cake!

Recette du célèbre "Carrot cake"

3 oeufs
200gr de sucre semoule
20 cl d'huile de tournesol
350gr de farine
1 sachet de levure
400gr de carottes râpées
100gr de raisins de corinthe
2 cc de cannelle
1 pincée de noix de muscade

-préchauffez le four th 6/180°
-battez les oeufs et le sucre jusqu'à obtenir un volume double
-ajoutez l'huile, la cannelle et la muscade. Remuez.
_incorporez farine et levure. mélangez puis ajoutez les carottes râpées et les raisins secs préalablement gonflés dans l'eau et égouttés. Mélangez délicatement.
-versez dans un moule beurré et fariné et mettez au four pendant 45 min.

STRANGE FRUIT
Southern trees bear strange fruit
Blood on the leaves
Blood at the root

Here is a strange and bitter crop

"Strange Fruit" is a song most famously performed by Billie Holiday that condemns American racism, particularly the practice of lynching and burning African Americans that was prevalent in the South at the time when it was written.
The "strange fruit" referred to in the song are the bodies of African American men hanged during a lynching. They contrast the pastoral scenes of the South with the ugliness of racist violence. The lyrics were so chilling that Holiday later said "The first time I sang it, I thought it was a mistake. There wasn't even a patter of applause when I finished. Then a lone person began to clap nervously. Then suddenly everyone was clapping and cheering."

Discover an American artist: Norman Rockwell

Here is an article about an American illustrator I really like.

Norman Percevel Rockwell est né à New York en 1894. Enfant, il présente des prédispositions naturelles pour le dessin et entre en 1908 à la Chase School of Fine and Applied Arts. En 1910, il abandonne ses études et entre à l'Art Students League of New York où il perfectionne sa technique auprès de George Bridgeman et Thomas Fogarty. À seize ans, il illustre son premier livre Tell my why, Stories et commence une longue collaboration avec le mouvement des boy-scouts des États-Unis en illustrant la revue Boy's life. C'est en 1916 qu'il propose sa première couverture pour le magazine The Saturday Evening Post, dès lors il devient le peintre de l'Américain moyen et son nom est à jamais identifié à cette revue dont il réalise les plus célèbres illustrations et couvertures jusqu'en 1960. En 1935, il illustre les romans de Mark Twain Tom Sawyer et Huckleberry Finn. En 1943 il participe à l'effort de guerre en publiant l'affiche The Four Freedoms[1] distribuée dans le monde entier. Dans les années 1950, il est considéré comme le plus populaire des artistes américains et fait les portraits d'Eisenhower, Kennedy ou Nasser. Il peint son triple auto-portrait : par une mise en abyme, le peintre se peint en train de se peindre en se regardant dans un miroir.

Les années 1960 voient le déclin de l'illustration au profit de la photographie, le changement de directeur artistique amène Rockwell à quitter le Saturday Evening Post. À la fin des années 1960, il travaille pour la revue Look, et illustre des thèmes plus en relation avec les convulsions politiques du temps. Sa plus fameuse illustration pour Look représente une petite fille noire américaine se rendant à l'école escortée par des agents fédéraux, en pleine période ségrégationniste. Vers la fin de sa vie, il fera encore des affiches publicitaires et le calendrier des boy-scouts jusqu'en 1976. Norman Rockwell meurt à Stockbridge en 1978.


Style
Le style de Norman Rockwell a été qualifié de storyteller (narratif). Comme illustrateur, il faisait en sorte que ses œuvres soient en parfaite correspondance avec les textes qu'il illustrait (c'est le cas de Tom Sawyer). Il use aussi de la caricature pour accentuer le caractère comique de certaines situations. source wilkipidia
